Hot Tub Drain and Refill: When and How to Do It

A hot tub cover plays an important role in keeping your spa clean, warm, and protected from outdoor elements. Over time, however, dirt, dust, leaves, moisture, and exposure to sunlight can cause the cover to look worn and reduce its effectiveness. Regular cleaning and proper care can help maintain its appearance while extending its useful life.

Remove Dirt and Debris Regularly

Before cleaning your hot tub cover, remove loose dirt, leaves, twigs, and other debris from its surface. Use a soft brush or clean microfiber cloth to gently sweep everything away. Avoid using sharp tools or rough brushes because they can scratch or damage the cover material.

It is a good idea to remove debris frequently, especially when your hot tub is located near trees or exposed to windy weather. Allowing dirt to build up can eventually contribute to staining and deterioration.

Clean the Cover With Mild Soap

For routine cleaning, use lukewarm water mixed with a small amount of mild soap. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and gently wipe the entire surface of the cover. Pay particular attention to areas where dirt and grime tend to accumulate.

After cleaning, rinse the cover thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining soap. Soap residue can attract additional dirt if it is not properly rinsed away. Never use harsh household cleaners, bleach, solvents, or abrasive products unless they are specifically recommended for your cover.

Keep Moisture Under Control

Moisture can contribute to mould, mildew, and unpleasant odours, particularly when a cover remains damp for extended periods. After washing the cover, allow it to dry completely before placing it back over the hot tub.

If possible, clean the cover on a dry, mild day and leave it exposed to air until both sides are fully dry. Regularly checking the underside of the cover is also helpful because this area can remain damp without being immediately noticeable.

Protect It From Sun Damage

Constant exposure to sunlight can cause the outer material of a hot tub cover to fade, crack, or become brittle. Using a suitable protective product designed specifically for hot tub covers can help reduce the effects of UV exposure.

Whenever possible, keep the cover protected when the hot tub is not being used. A properly fitted cover provides an additional layer of protection against sunlight, rain, dirt, and other environmental conditions.

Handle the Cover Carefully

Hot tub covers can be surprisingly heavy, and lifting or folding them incorrectly may damage the foam core or hinges. Avoid dragging the cover across the ground or placing heavy objects on top of it.

A cover lifter can make opening and closing the cover easier while reducing unnecessary strain. When storing or removing the cover, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to prevent accidental damage.

Inspect Your Cover Regularly

Cleaning is only one part of maintaining a hot tub cover. Inspect it regularly for cracks, tears, water absorption, damaged stitching, or areas where the foam appears to be losing its shape. Early signs of damage can often be addressed before they become larger problems.
